A Chocolate Cupcake Sprinkled with Gratitude and Appreciation
It all started with a family in need and ended with a cupcake.
An 11 year old girl who goes by the nickname, Apple, had spent much of her life unable to access the backyard of her home, thus the warped and broken french doors leading to the backyard have remained closed for many years. To make matters worse, without access to a wheelchair ramp, a huge safety risk was created in the event of a fire blocking access to the front door. Due to high costs of health services for Apple, Myra, her mother has been unable to keep up with the necessary repairs and maintenance. This all changed with the help she received from Rebuilding Together Orlando (RTO), CBRE and selfless volunteers.
CBRE Group, Inc (CBRE) joined RTO to improve the home and life of this Central Florida family during their fifth annual “Get Out and Give Back” BuildMonth through CBRE Cares, the company’s national corporate philanthropy program. In addition to being the full-time caregiver for Apple, Myra is the mother of two enlisted U.S. military servicemen.
On October 22, 2014 dozens of CBRE volunteers with the leadership of RTO began to make a positive impact in the quality of life for this Apopka based family. Repairs included improving accessibility and safety by installing two wheelchair ramps, exterior soffit and fascia repair, basic landscaping, and painting. The installation of a new bathroom sink and vanity and the repair of a major plumbing issue were also addressed on a separate date. Additionally, on October 25th eight volunteers from the veterans group, Heroes for Freedom, installed new french doors in the back of the home alleviating the fire risk as noted earlier.
CBRE volunteers have been working with RTO for several years now and keep coming back to make a difference in someone’s life. RTO values this partnership and is grateful to have such a great partner in achieving our mission of creating a safe and healthy home for every person. A day that began with painting, sweat and smiles, ended with a very grateful 11 year old girl taking it upon herself to show thanks in the best way she could; a chocolate cupcake sprinkled with gratitude and appreciation.
